1. General Eligibility
All participants must be registered for the event prior to race day. Registration includes acceptance of these rules and regulations, along with the waiver of liability.
- The 10K Open Division is open to all participants ages 14 and older as of race day
- The Kids Run (1K) is open to participants ages 5-13 as of race day
- Participants under 18 must have parental or guardian consent to participate
- All participants must be in good physical condition and able to complete the distance
2. Race Registration and Bib Numbers
Each participant must display their assigned race bib number on the front of their body, clearly visible at all times during the race.
- Bib numbers are non-transferable and must be worn by the registered participant only
- Participants found wearing another person's bib will be disqualified
- Bibs must not be altered, folded, or obscured in any way
- Timing chips attached to bibs must remain intact throughout the race
3. Course Rules
Participants must follow the designated course at all times. The course will be clearly marked with signage, cones, and course marshals.
- Participants must stay on the designated course route
- Cutting the course or taking shortcuts will result in immediate disqualification
- Participants must obey all course marshals and traffic control personnel
- The use of bicycles, skates, rollerblades, or any wheeled devices is prohibited unless part of an approved adaptive equipment accommodation
- Headphones are permitted but participants should keep volume low enough to hear course instructions and emergency warnings
4. Timing and Results
Official timing will be recorded using chip timing technology. Gun time begins when the starting signal sounds; chip time begins when the participant crosses the starting line.
- Awards and age group recognition will be based on chip time
- Overall winners will be determined by gun time
- Participants must cross the start and finish timing mats to receive an official time
- Results will be posted online within 48 hours of race completion
5. Awards and Prizes
10K Open Division:
- Overall Top 3 Male and Female finishers
- Age group awards: Top 3 in each 5-year age category (14-19, 20-24, 25-29, etc.)
- Overall winners are not eligible for age group awards
Kids Run (1K):
- All finishers receive a participation medal
- Top 3 Male and Female in age groups: 5-8, 9-10, 11-13
Awards must be claimed at the awards ceremony on race day or within 30 days by contacting race management.
6. Safety and Medical
The safety of all participants is our highest priority. Medical personnel will be stationed along the course and at the finish line.
- Participants feeling ill or injured should notify the nearest course marshal or medical personnel immediately
- Race management reserves the right to remove any participant from the course if they appear unable to continue safely
- Weather conditions will be monitored; race officials may delay, modify, or cancel the event if conditions become unsafe
- Water stations will be provided at regular intervals along the 10K course
7. Code of Conduct
All participants are expected to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner throughout the event.
- Abusive language, unsportsmanlike conduct, or interference with other participants is prohibited
- Littering is prohibited except in designated zones near water stations
- Participants must respect course marshals, volunteers, and fellow runners at all times
- The use or possession of alcohol or illegal substances during the race is strictly prohibited
8. Disqualification
Participants may be disqualified for any of the following violations:
- Running with a bib number not assigned to them
- Leaving the designated course or cutting the course short
- Accepting unauthorized assistance (pacing by bicycle, vehicle, etc.)
- Unsportsmanlike conduct or failure to follow race official instructions
- Starting before the official start signal
Disqualified participants will have their results removed and will not be eligible for awards or prizes.
Important Notice: By participating in the Chicago Waterfront 10K, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to abide by all rules of competition. Race officials reserve the right to make final decisions on all matters related to the event. The race director's decisions are final.
